XENX1001 Advanced Summer Course in English

This two-week Advanced Summer Course in English (40 contact hours, 4 ECTS credits) is arranged on 20 August - 3 September 2018 by the University Language Centre. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the University of Jyväskylä.
  • Learning outcomes: By the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:
    • communicate and interact competently in informal and formal situations
    • compose a persuasive academic text 
  • Contents: This is a two-week intensive preparatory course organized in August. The aim of the course is to prepare students for studying their major through English at the University of Jyväskylä. We will activate, practice and improve listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English at upper intermediate – advanced level. We will also discuss intercultural differences in academic conventions. Typical tasks include reading, discussions and evaluating information as well as writing an essay following academic conventions.
  • Modes of study: Contact teaching (40 hours) and independent study. Compulsory attendance.
  • Assessment: No final exam. Course evaluation is based on active participation in classroom activities and successful completion of course assignments.

  • Application process: Applicants will receive information on their admission to the course within a week after the application deadline. The participation in the course must be confirmed by 31 May at the latest. A link to a course participation confirmation form will be sent together with the confirmation of acceptance.
  • Timetable: 20 August 2018 - 3 September 2018. The lessons take place on Mon 20 Aug, Tue 21 Aug, Wed 22 Aug, Thu 23 Aug, Tue 28 Aug, Wed 29 Aug, Thu 30 Aug, Fri 31 Aug and Mon 3 Sept.
  • Target group: incoming exchange students
  • Proficiency level: B2-C2, higher intermediate – advanced. Before applying for the course, please assess your language skills in the Erasmus+ Online Linguistic Support system (OLS) (contact your home university Erasmus+ coordinator for more information and access), if you are an Erasmus+ student, or by using the framework available on the Language Centre website. This course is targeted at students whose English language proficiency level is B2-C2.
  • Minimun and maximum number of participants: min. 14, max. 20. Students are admitted for the course on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • NB! It is not possible to take both this course and the Intensive Summer Course in Finnish or XENX040 Intensive Summer Course in Academic English because the courses overlap.
