Master's Degree Programme in Nanoscience

Nanoscience is a fascinating combination of physics, chemistry and biology. The research at Nanoscience Center (NSC), JYU covers both experimental and theoretical investigation of molecules, materials and structures in the scale of 1–100 nanometers i.e. the size of a single molecule.

Why this programme?

Nanoscience influences many technological areas from biotechnology to quantum technology, thus there is an increasing need for multidisciplinary experts in nanoscientific research and development. In the Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience you will use high-tech methods and instruments. You will for example to learn characterize and control single molecules, produce materials in nanoscale, and to modify them into functional devices.

In the programme, you will acquire multidisciplinary know-how in biology, chemistry and physics to understand and control natural phenomena taking place at the nanometer scale.

Applications for this master's degree programme can be submitted once a year in January, and once accepted, your studies will begin in September. From this programme you will graduate with a Master of Science degree.

Programme info

Applications for Master's Degree Programmes can be submitted once a year in January. The next call for applications is in January 2025.

The Master´s Degree Programme in Nanoscience is a two-year programme amounting 120 ECTS. All courses of the Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience are taught in English.

The Curriculum consists of Nanoscience courses (22 ETCS) which are obligatory for all students regardless of the major. In addition, studies include compulsory and optional advanced level courses (80–100 ETCS) according the major. The rest of the optional courses (18–0 ETCS) can be selected based on student’s own interest and career plan.

Student profile

Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nanoscience, Physics, Chemistry, Cell and molecular biology or other relevant field may apply for Master’s Degree Programme in Nanoscience. The major of your Master’s Programme studies is either Chemistry, Physics or Cell and molecular biology depending on your Bachelor’s Degree courses. However, all students will have to take specialized nanoscience courses regardless of their major.

When graduating from the programme you will

  • master the concepts and phenomena of nanoscience
  • apply wide interdisciplinary knowledge to solve forefront research problems
  • manage projects in cross-disciplinary team
  • evaluate the limitations and applications of nanoscientific methods
  • communicate and present scientific results both verbally and in writing
As a graduate of the Programme you will have a solid competence to contribute to the future of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Career

Career opportunities for the graduates are typically in industry or academia. Many high-tech companies are interested in nanoscience and nanotechnology, since these fields are focused on applications and innovations. The research and product development in these companies requires more and more multidisciplinary experts. Depending your own study plan you will be qualified for many jobs for example in the health, biotechnology, space technology or chemical industry sector. In addition, the Master's programme provides excellent preparation for an academic career. You have plenty of choices to tune your degree for a specific academic research.

Master’s Degree in Nanoscience provides an excellent basis for PhD studies in Chemistry, Physics and Cell and Molecular Biology. After graduating from the Master’s programme it usually takes four years on a full-time basis to complete a Doctoral Degree in the JYU.

The NSC is an international working environment. About one fourth of the staff are non-Finns and all research groups use English as their working language. Every JYU student can also apply for exchange or internship abroad as part of the Degree studies.
