Orientation programme for degree students

The Orientation Programme, organized jointly by the University of Jyväskylä and the Student Union, is designed to help new international students settle in and get to know each other, the University and the City of Jyväskylä. It is our way to say “Welcome”.

Monday 3 September

Rectors' Greetings to New Students and Semmarit in Concert

18.00 Lounaispuisto (park opposite to the University Library)

All new degree students are invited to this event hosted by the rector of the University of Jyväskylä. Semmarit, a male show choir with origins at JYU will give a live show during the evening. Ask for a ticket from your tutor. Only limited seats available, so be early!

Tuesday 4 September

Check-in desk

9.00 – 10.00 Main building C, lobby

A chance to pick up a certificate of registration and a user license to the university computer network if you have taken care of the registration in advance. Please bring your ID! Also a possibility to chat with the representatives of IDESCO, the international degree student community of the University of Jyväskylä, Erasmus Student Network and AIESEC. Coffee and tea served at 9.00-10.00.

Welcoming words from Mari Ikonen, Director of Student and Academic Services. Come and meet the staff of the Student and Academic Services and your fellow students. Information on practicalities, such as discounts, student cards and student restaurants, provided.

The Opening Fair is a great way to get acquainted with other students, the Student Union and the activities to be found at JYU and in the Jyväskylä region.

New and old students alike are welcome to the Campus Picnic to enjoy the relaxed programme, music and food.

Student Union JYY Grand Opening

18.00 Ilokivi building

What is JYY, what goes on in Ilokivi and how to make new friends at the university? Find answers to these questions and kick off the semester at the Grand Opening Party! Introduction to the Services of the Finnish Immigration Service, Register Office and Central Finland Health Care District

In this information session, representatives from the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri), Register Office and the Central Finland Health Care District will talk about the services they provide for international students. It is also possible to ask questions. The session is organized by the Student Union.

Academic Sports' uMove Workout

Saturday 8 September

The kickstart of the Academic sports, uMove Workout, takes place on Saturday 8 September in building L (Liikunta), U2 sports hall and gyms in Rentukka and monitoimitalo at Hippos. No pre-registration needed. The event is free of charge and you can use gyms with your student card or certificate of registration (Rentukka 7 am - 11 pm and monitoimitalo 10 am - 2 pm).

The Ultimate Sauna Experience

Bring your own towel and swimsuit. Organized by Erasmus Student Network.

Local Register Office

Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 September

The Local Register Office (Maistraatti in Finnish) visits JYU on Wed and Thu 12-13 Sept. Please take this opportunity to get a Finnish personal identity code which the university requires from you and which you may also need for different services in Finland. The following documents are required when requesting for the personal identity code:

  • Passport (citizens of non-European Union countries)
  • Passport or ID card (citizens of European Union countries)
  • Residence permit card (citizens of non-European Union countries)
  • Certificate of registration (pick up from the check-in desk)
