Registration for non-attendance during first year of studies

According to the Universities Act, a student may register for non-attendance during the first year of studies for the following reasons only:

  1. The student is carrying out military or non-military service according to the Conscription Act (1438/2007), the Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or the Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);
  2. The student is on maternity, paternity or parental leave; or
  3. The student is unable to start the studies due to personal illness or injury/disability.

If you wish to register for non-attendance for one of the reasons listed above, you cannot use the OILI service for registration. Instead, please fill in the non-attendance form and send it together with required documents (mentioned on the form) to: Admission Services, P.O. BOX 35, FIN-40014 University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Registration for non-attendance must be completed by the registration deadline.

Even if the legal grounds for absence apply to one semester only (e.g. military service or maternity leave beginning in January), the student may register for non-attendance for the entire academic year. Similarly, the student may change the registration for attendance for the spring semester to non-attendance within the registration period of spring semester if there is a statutory reason for the absence.

Registration for attendance during only one semester obliges the student to pay the membership fee of that semester to the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä.

For tuition-paying students, registration for attendance during only one semester obliges the student to pay the tuition fee for that semester. The student can register for attendance only after paying the tuition fee for the semester in question.

Continuing students

Annual registration

Each student pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at JYU must formally register for attendance or non-attendance for each academic year. The student must register for attendance or non-attendance for each of the degrees that s/he has the right to complete. If the student graduates during the ongoing academic year and does not have other degree study rights, s/he does not have permission to register for the next academic year.

Only a student who has registered for attendance is allowed to participate in instruction, complete studies or degrees and receive student financial aid. Students must register for attendance before participating in instruction or in an examination.

If a student is not going to complete studies during the academic year, he/she may register for non-attendance. A non-attending student does not pay the Student Union membership fee and is not eligible for student benefits.

If you perform a service under the Conscription Act, the Non-Military Service Act or the Women’s Voluntary Military Service Act, or are on maternity, paternity or parental leave, your period of non-attendance is excluded from the normative duration of studies. Similarly, periods of absence up to a maximum of two academic terms (four academic terms if you started your studies before 1 August 2005) are excluded from the normative duration of studies. You may register for non-attendance for more than two (four) academic terms, but the terms exceeding two (four) terms decrease the normative duration of studies. The reduction in time for completing the degree applies to study rights that lead to a bachelor’s and master’s degree and that have started on 1 August 2005 or thereafter. NB! If you fail to register for attendance or non-attendance, the normative time for completing the degree will decrease during the unregistered period. Remember to register for non-attendance if you do not complete any studies during the academic year.

Retrospective registration is not possible. As for study rights that lead to a bachelor’s or master’s degree and that have started on 1 August 2005 or thereafter, a student cannot register for terms after the calculated completion time of studies unless the student has applied for and has been granted additional time to complete his/her studies.

Registration deadline for students continuing their studies is 31 July 2019. Students whose right to study towards a degree (“study time”) is expiring on 31 December 2019 but are granted an extension to her/his right to study, must register for the spring semester 2020 by 31 December 2019.

Registration for attendance

Register for attendance if you participate in instruction, complete studies or a degree and receive student financial aid during the academic year.

Registration for attendance takes place online in the OILI service: https://oili.csc.fi/continuing-students/ (select language from the bar on top of the page). Before registering, please check in your personal data in Korppi whether your 'Personal identification number' is the same as your official Finnish personal identity code. If not, please ask the Student Services at opiskelijapalvelut@jyu.fi to enter the correct code to the student register. You can register in OILI only after your Finnish personal identity code is correct in our student register.

If you cannot register in the OILI service (e.g. if your JY user account is not active, or you do not have internet banking services in a Finnish bank), you can register for attendance by paying the Student Union membership fee directly to the Student Union’s bank account (Instructions). After paying the fee, you must show or send a receipt of the payment to Student Services. After this, your registration will be entered in the student register.

If you are required to pay the tuition fee, you can register for attendance only after taking care of the payment of the next academic year. If you have been awarded the scholarship which covers the tuition fee, you can register for attendance for your second academic year only after completing 55 ECTS credits and informing the Admission Services about this. Tuition fees are not charged from, and tuition fee scholarships are not paid for semesters during which the student is registered for non-attendance. Additional information on tuition fees and scholarships: admissions@jyu.fi.

Certificate of registration

If you require a certificate of registration showing that you are a registered student at the University of Jyväskylä during the current and/or next academic year, you can order one at https://opiskelu.jyu.fi/fi/opiskelijapalvelut/opiskelijapalveluiden-lomakkeet/ot.

Registration for non-attendance

Should you wish to postpone your studies for one or two semesters and are not going to complete any studies, you may register for non-attendance and still remain enrolled. Registering for non-attendance means that you do not pay the Student Union membership fee and are not eligible for student benefits.

Registration for non-attendance at the University takes place online in the OILI service: https://oili.csc.fi/continuing-students/ (select language from the bar on top of the page). Before registering, please check in your personal data in Korppi, whether your 'Personal identification number' is the same as your official Finnish personal identity code. If not, please ask the Student Services at opiskelijapalvelut@jyu.fi to enter the correct code to the student register. If you wish to register for non-attendance but cannot register in OILI, please register by sending an email to opiskelijapalvelut@jyu.fi.

Registration for non-attendance during only one semester obliges the student to pay the Student Union membership fee of the semester of attendance.

Students with tuition fees do not pay tuition for a period of registered non-attendance.

Students going abroad

Those taking part in student exchange or practical training abroad during their studies at Jyväskylä should also register to the university by 31 July as full-time students by paying the Student Union membership fee. See the instructions above on how to pay the fee.

Additionally, those students, who study/work abroad through some other programme/funding than JYU exchange agreement/funding, need to fill in the following form by signing up through Haka by using your JYU user account:
Registration form for students studying / working abroad outside JYU exchange programmes

NB! In case you are studying / working abroad through JYU exchange programme/funding, you should not fill in this form!

Students complementing their degree studies

A student who has completed his/her degree, to which the study right entitles, and who wishes to pursue complementary studies in the subjects to which he/she had the rights, can without a separate study right or other right to study pursue such studies until the end of the academic year following the academic year during which he/she graduated. For example, if a student completes his/her studies and takes out the degree in July 2019, he/she may complement the studies until 31 July 2020 without any fee. If the degree is granted in August 2019, he/she may complement the studies free of charge until 31 July 2021.

Students who wish to complement their degree can submit their registration by e-mail to the university at opiskelijapalvelut@jyu.fi.

Students who are complementing their degree studies cannot become members of the Student Union and pay the Student Union fee, which means that they will not be entitled to any student benefits.

Separate study rights

If a person wishes to pursue other studies at the university after the complementary study right has expired, he/she has to apply for a separate study right to the subjects he/she wishes to study or register as student in the Open University, provided that their course supply contains these subjects. Faculties may grant separate study rights only to those study modules that the Open University does not have in the curriculum.

A study right to complementary studies in new subjects has to be applied for as a separate study right. The faculty can charge a fee of maximum 15 €/credit for such new study rights.

Students who have a study right for separate studies cannot become members of the Student Union and pay the Student Union fee, which means that they will not be entitled to any student benefits.
