Annual registration

Each student pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at JYU must formally register for attendance or non-attendance for each academic year. The student must register for attendance or non-attendance for each of the degrees that s/he has the right to complete.

Registration for attendance at the University takes place online in the OILI service: https://oili.csc.fi/continuing-students/ (select language from the bar on top of the page).

If you cannot register in the OILI service (e.g. if your JY user account is not active, or you do not have internet banking services in a Finnish bank), you can register by paying the Student Union membership fee 130,50 € (academic year 2017-2018) to the Student Union’s account: IBAN: FI30 1581 3000 0339 35, BIC/SWIFT: NDEAFIHH, reference number: 07922. After paying the fee, you must show the receipt of the payment at the Student Services (T-building, 2nd floor). Your registration for attendance will be entered into the student register after this.

Registration deadline for students continuing their studies is 31 July 2017.

You can collect the sticker for the student card starting from 1 August at the Student Union Office at Keskussairaalantie 2 or at the Student Services (T-building, 2nd floor). The sticker from the previous academic year is valid until end of August at FSHS and until end of September at VR/Matkahuolto and in the student restaurants.

Registration for non-attendance during first year of studies

According to the Universities Act, a student may register for non-attendance during the first year of studies for the following reasons only:

  1. The student is carrying out military or non-military service according to the Conscription Act (1438/2007), the Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or the Act on Women’s Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);
  2. The student is on maternity, paternity or parental leave; or
  3. The student is unable to start the studies due to personal illness or injury/disability.

If you wish to register for non-attendance for one of the reasons listed above, you cannot use the OILI service for registration. Instead, please fill in the non-attendance form and send it together with required documents (mentioned on the form) to: Admission Services, P.O. BOX 35, FIN-40014 University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Registration for non-attendance must be completed by the registration deadline.

Even if the legal grounds for absence apply to one semester only (e.g. military service or maternity leave beginning in January), the student may register for non-attendance for the entire academic year. Similarly, the student may change the registration for attendance for the spring semester to non-attendance within the registration period of spring semester, if there is a statutory reason for the absence.

Registration for attendance during only one semester obliges the student to pay the membership fee of that semester to the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä.

For tuition-paying students, registration for attendance during only one semester obliges the student to pay the tuition fee for that semester. The student can register for attendance only after paying the tuition fee for the semester in question.

Licentiate and Doctoral students

Doctoral students (those pursuing studies towards a licentiate or doctoral degree) are to register for attendance or non-attendance by 31 July in the Korppi system.

Study units and credits can be registered only for students who have registered for attendance, and doctoral certificates can be awarded only to students who have registered for attendance or non-attendance. If a student does not intend to complete studies during the academic year, he/she may register for non-attendance.

New doctoral students

To register for the first time, a new doctoral student must complete the enrolment form the student has received with the admission letter and return it to the faculty. After returning the enrolment form, the student can obtain a computer username and password to the University network from the University's IT Services. After receiving the username and password, the student must login to the Korppi system via the link below and fill in basic information about the thesis.

After this, the student must register every year online in the Korppi system.

Registration in Korppi

Register at https://korppi.jyu.fi/kotka/person/postgraduateStudies.jsp. Alternatively, you can login to Korppi https://korppi.jyu.fi and select Studies - Postgraduate studies.

To register in Korppi, you need the following:

  • The right to pursue a doctoral degree, granted by one of the faculties of the University of Jyväskylä (requires that you have returned the enrolment form that you received with the admission letter). If you have questions about your study rights, please contact your faculty.
  • A user ID of the University of Jyväskylä. If you do not have a user ID, please contact the IT Services of the University. Doctoral students whose user ID is not valid anymore shall contact Admission and Student Services at opiskelijapalvelut@jyu.fi in order to receive further instructions on how to activate the user ID.

Only information saved as public in Korppi are the name and a short description of the thesis and keywords that you enter in your thesis topic data. The rest of the information is visible only for your supervisors and persons in charge of doctoral studies.

You can use the registration link above to update your supervision document even after the registration period. Remember to update all changes in your personal data (e.g. email address) or basic information about the thesis (e.g. supervisors).

Registration guidelines

Registration instructions are sent by e-mail at the end of July to all doctoral students who have been enrolled during the previous academic year. Detailed instructions for annual registration are available in the Korppi guide and in the Korppi video instructions.

Late registrations (after 31 July)

Doctoral students not registered for attendance or non-attendance by the given date will lose their right to study. When a student loses his/her right to study, his/her user ID to the University’s IT network expires, unless there is another reason for keeping the user ID valid (e.g. for staff members).

If a doctoral student who has lost the right to study because of not registering for attendance or non-attendance wishes to continue his/her studies later, the student must pay the re-entry fee of € 35 to the University’s bank account (Danske Bank) IBAN FI0489199710001078 with reference number 9942114 or in cash to the Soppi University Shop. See the instructions above on how to pay the fee.

In addition, students studying or doing an internship abroad should fill in the ‘Registration form for out-going exchange students’ (‘Ulkomaille opiskelemaan lähtevien lomake’).

Students complementing their degree studies or students with the right to separate studies

Students who have the study right to studies that complement or upgrade their degree and students who have a separate study right can submit their registration by e-mail to the university at by 31 July. NB. The registration for attendance ensures that the courses you will possibly complete and to which you already have the right to study, will be graded and recorded.

A student who has completed his/her degree, to which the study right entitles, and who wishes to pursue complementary studies, can without a separate study right or other right to study, pursue such studies until the end of the next academic year according to the rights to study those subjects that he/she has had for the degree studies.

Students who are complementing their degree studies or students who have a study right for separate studies cannot pay the Student Union fee, which means that they will not be entitled to any student benefits.

Students who are complementing their degree studies shall pay the re-registration fee as well, if they register after 31 July, or if they have not been registered at all in the previous academic year.

Duration of the right to pursue complementary studies and separate study rights

A student who has completed his/her degree, to which the study right entitles, and who wishes to pursue complementary studies in the subjects to which he/she had the rights, can without a separate study right  or other right to study, pursue such studies until the end of the next academic year.

It is possible to pursue complementary studies in the faculties without fees immediately after the completion of the degree and  in the framework of the previous study rights that the student was granted for his/her degree. A study right to complementary studies in new subjects has to be applied for as a separate study right, with the exception of the so-called free approbatur subjects. The faculty can charge a fee of maximum 10 €/credit for such new study rights.

For example, if a student completes his/her studies and takes out the degree in July 2010, he/she may complement the studies until 31 July 2011 without any fee. If the degree is granted in August 2010, he/she may complement the studies free of charge until 31 July 2012.

During the present academic year a student registered for complementary studies cannot proceed the studies during the next academic year. If a person still wishes to have another academic year for this purpose free of charge, or pursue other studies at the university after that, he/she has to apply for a separate study right to the subjects he/she wishes to study or register as student in the Open University, provided that their course supply contains these subjects. Faculties may grant separate study rights only to those study modules that the Open University does not have in the curriculum.
